# Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean for Families: An Honest Comparison From Someone Who Books Both By Alexandra Jones · Published 2026-09-08 · Cruise Tips > Price, kids' clubs, cabins, food, private islands, and the ages where each line wins, with 2027 fares. A 7-night Caribbean cruise on Disney costs roughly twice what the same week costs on Royal Caribbean. Whether that is worth it depends on how old your kids are and what "vacation" means to the adults. I book both lines every month. Here is how I decide. ## Price Disney published its opening-day fares for fall 2027 through spring 2028 on September 8, 2026. For two adults, taxes included, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean on the Disney Fantasy started at $3,566 for an inside cabin and $4,196 for a verandah. The 7-night Western Caribbean on the Disney Treasure started at $4,505 inside and $5,583 verandah. A 3-night Bahamas on the Disney Wish started at $2,230 inside. Disney does not discount as the sailing date approaches; the opening-day price is the low, and it climbs as cabins sell. Royal Caribbean runs the other way. A 4-night Bahamas cruise for a family of four in an inside cabin runs about $1,200 to $1,500 in base fare on Royal against $3,900 to $4,200 on Disney, according to a February 2026 comparison. Royal also runs Kids Sail Free promotions (the current one covers summer 2027 sailings booked by September 14, 2026, with taxes still due), and its Best Price Guarantee lets me reprice your booking any time before final payment if the fare drops. Disney has no kids-sail-free offer and rarely discounts beyond military, Florida resident, and last-minute restricted fares. Gratuities are close: $16 per person per night on Disney, $18.50 on Royal. Disney includes soda, juice, and room service; on Royal, soda is a $13 to $18 a day package and room service is $7.95 an order. ## Kids' clubs and ages Disney's Oceaneer Club takes kids from age 3, toilet-trained, up to 10 on the newer ships and 12 on the older ones, with Edge for 11 to 14 and Vibe for 14 to 17. The clubs are free, run most of the day and evening, and are the reason parents get a dinner alone. The nursery takes 6 months to 3 years at an hourly charge. Royal's Adventure Ocean splits 3 to 5, 6 to 8, and 9 to 11, with teen spaces for 12 to 17. Sessions are free in three blocks (morning, afternoon, and 7 to 10 p.m.), and the late-night party zone from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. costs extra. The nursery takes 6 to 36 months, also hourly. Neither line allows swim diapers in the main pools. Royal has a Baby Splash Zone on 18 ships for the diaper crowd. Disney's water play areas are for toilet-trained kids. My age rule: under 8, Disney wins on the characters, the club, and the pacing. Eight to 15, Royal wins on the sheer amount to do. Mixed ages, keep reading. ## What there is to do Royal builds the biggest ships in the world and fills them. Icon of the Seas has six water slides on Thrill Island, seven pools, a family neighborhood called Surfside, an indoor AquaDome, and an ice rink. Wonder of the Seas has the Ultimate Abyss dry slide, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, and an ice rink. Legend of the Seas, which launched in July 2026, has what Royal calls the largest water park at sea plus laser tag. A ten-year-old will not run out of things to do in seven days. Disney's ships have one water coaster (the AquaMouse on the Wish, Treasure, and Destiny; the AquaDuck on the Dream and Fantasy), a few pools, and character meet-and-greets all day. The entertainment is the theater: full stage productions of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin on the Wish, Moana and Beauty and the Beast on the Treasure, Hercules and Frozen on the Destiny. The dinner shows are the thing nobody else has: the Arendelle restaurant on the Wish runs a Frozen show during dinner, and the Worlds of Marvel restaurant on the Wish and Treasure runs an Avengers mission at the table. ## Food Disney's rotational dining moves you through three themed restaurants over the cruise with the same servers, and it is all included. The adult-only restaurants cost extra: Palo is $55, Remy and Enchanté are $145 for dinner. Royal's main dining room and Windjammer buffet are included. Specialty restaurants on Star of the Seas run $38 at Izumi, $44 at Giovanni's, $52 at Hooked, and $56 at Chops, or $31 to $62 a night for the unlimited dining package. Kids 6 to 12 pay $14.99 at specialty restaurants and under-5s eat free. Royal has more food variety; Disney has better included food and the shows come with it. ## Cabins Disney's standard cabins sleep five and have a split bathroom (toilet and sink in one room, tub-shower and sink in another), which is the single feature families rave about most. Royal's standard cabins mostly sleep four, so a family of five needs a family stateroom or connecting cabins, and both sell out first. On the high end, Royal has the Ultimate Family Townhouse on Icon, three levels with a slide, sleeping eight. ## Private islands Disney's Castaway Cay in the Abacos includes food, an adults-only beach, and a 5K fun run; Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on Eleuthera opened in 2024. Royal's Perfect Day at CocoCay includes seven beaches, five pools, a kids' splash area, and food, and charges for the Thrill Waterpark (14 slides, including the 135-foot Daredevil's Peak), the adults-only Hideaway Beach, and the Coco Beach Club. Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau opened in December 2025 as a paid day pass. If a water park day is the highlight for your kids, CocoCay is the best beach day in the Caribbean. If you want the beach without a wallet, Castaway Cay. ## Adults Both lines take adults seriously. Disney has Quiet Cove, the Senses spa, and adult-only districts like The Bayou and the Hyperspace Lounge on the Wish; the older Fantasy has a full adult district. Royal has the adults-only Solarium on every ship, the Suite Neighborhood on the big ships, and full production shows: The Wizard of Oz on Icon, Back to the Future on Star, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Legend, plus the AquaTheater dive shows and ice shows. Adults without kids in tow tend to prefer Royal. Adults with kids under eight tend to sleep better on Disney. ## Booking Disney takes a 20% deposit and wants final payment 90 days out on cruises of 1 to 5 nights and 120 days on longer ones. The 2027–2028 itineraries opened to the public on September 8, 2026, and every week you wait costs money. Royal takes $100 to $500 per person depending on length, wants final payment 75 to 120 days out, and lets me chase price drops until then. Advisor onboard credit on Disney runs $50 to $1,000 depending on the fare; I pass it through. ## The verdict I give families Kids under 8, first cruise, or a family with a Disney kid: Disney, on the Wish or Treasure out of Port Canaveral, 4 nights first if the budget is tight. Kids 8 to 15, or teens who want slides and a surf simulator: Royal, on Icon, Star, or Wonder. Family of five in one cabin: Disney unless you book Royal a year out. Budget under $4,000 for a family of four: Royal. Grandparents coming along: either, with an adults-only beach day at Serenity Bay or Hideaway Beach.
