# Hawaii Honeymoon Planning: Which Island, When to Go, and What It Costs

A seven-night Hawaii honeymoon for two costs about $7,400 to $8,700 at a good resort in 2026, and closer to $12,000 at the famous ones, flights included. The bigger decision is which island, because the islands are more different from each other than most couples expect.

One note before anything else. Hurricane Lowell passed west of Kauai on September 8 and 9, 2026, with winds over 100 mph. Poipu, the island's main resort area, took heavy damage, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority is asking Kauai-bound travelers to reschedule or visit another island for now. If Kauai is your dream, I am watching the reopening dates and will not book it until the resorts and roads are back.

## Which island is right for your honeymoon

Maui is the default for a reason. Wailea and Kaanapali have the deepest bench of honeymoon resorts, the beaches are calm on the leeward side, and the two signature days (Haleakalā sunrise and the Road to Hana) are both here. Wailea is 40 minutes from the airport, Kaanapali 50, Hana almost three hours. Hotel Wailea is the island's only adults-only luxury hotel, 72 suites, and was named the best hotel in Hawaii by Travel + Leisure in 2026.

Kauai is greener, wetter, and quieter. The Napali Coast by catamaran runs $240 to $260 a person, and a 40- to 50-minute helicopter tour is $369 to $499. Poipu on the south shore is the sunnier resort zone, 30 minutes from the airport; Princeville on the north shore is an hour and gets more rain. See the storm note above before booking for late 2026.

Oahu is the city option. Waikiki is 30 minutes from the airport, Halekulani's honeymoon offer includes SUV transfers and dinner at La Mer, and you can be at the North Shore in an hour. I book Oahu for two nights at the start or end of a honeymoon more often than for the whole week.

The Big Island is for couples who want the volcano, the manta ray night snorkel, and the stargazing trip up Mauna Kea (from $330 a person, parkas and supper included). The Kohala Coast resorts are 20 minutes from Kona airport and sit on the dry side. Volcanoes National Park is two to two and a half hours away.

Two islands in one trip works if you have nine nights or more. Inter-island flights on Southwest start at $65 one way, but each hop eats most of a day once you count checkout, the airport, and the rental car return.

## When to go

Hawaii is warm all year, about 85°F in summer and 78°F in winter. November through March is the wetter stretch, mostly on the windward sides; the resort coasts stay drier. It is also whale season, with humpbacks thickest from January to March off Maui.

Prices peak at Christmas and New Year's, in July, and over spring break. The best-value windows are mid-September through October and late March through early June. May gives the best balance of weather and price. September is the cheapest month and, as this year showed, inside hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30.

## The two reservations you cannot wing

Haleakalā sunrise requires a $1 vehicle reservation for the 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. entry window, released 60 days ahead and again 2 days ahead at 7 a.m. Hawaii time, plus the $30 park entry. They sell out in minutes. Hanauma Bay on Oahu is $25 a person, opens reservations 2 days ahead at 7 a.m., and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Waianapanapa, the black-sand beach on the Road to Hana, needs a reservation booked within 30 days of the visit, $5 a person plus $10 parking.

## What it costs

The Hawaii Tourism Authority put average visitor spending at $296 per person per day in July 2026, and the average stay at 7.6 days. Statewide hotel rates averaged $384 a night in June 2026, with Maui the most expensive island at around $558 in the most recent island-level data.

Taxes changed on January 1, 2026. The state lodging tax rose from 10.25% to 11% under the new Green Fee law, which funds climate work. Add the county tax of up to 3% and the general excise tax of about 4.5%, and lodging taxes total roughly 19%. Resort fees run $20 to $55 a night on top, and hotel parking $20 to $45. Rental cars are $55 to $110 a day.

Airfare per person is roughly $350 to $550 from the West Coast and $650 to $900 from the East Coast. A published 2026 budget for two, seven nights, puts the total at $4,760 to $5,220 on a tight plan, $7,380 to $8,650 mid-range, and $11,600 to $13,020 at the luxury end.

Honeymoon perks are booked, not automatic. 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay's sweetheart package adds breakfast, robes, and a couples massage. Grand Wailea waives the resort fee and valet on its Grand Arrival rate and takes 20% off stays of five nights or more. Mauna Lani gives a $100 daily resort credit. Those go on the reservation when I make it. A lei greeting at the airport is $30 to $70 a person, and the Old Lahaina Luau, the one I send couples to, is about $229 a person with gratuity included.

## A seven-night Maui honeymoon, priced

Flights from the East Coast for two: $1,600. Seven nights at a Wailea resort at $700 a night: $4,900, plus about $930 in taxes and a $50 resort fee a night. Rental car for a week: $500. Haleakalā sunrise, Road to Hana, a snorkel trip to Molokini, and a luau: about $700. Food at $150 a day for two: $1,050. Total: about $10,000. Trade the Wailea resort for a Kaanapali one at $450 a night and it drops to about $8,000.

## Small things that matter in Hawaii

Only mineral sunscreen is sold on Maui, and the state bans oxybenzone and octinoxate everywhere. Lahaina has reopened much of Front Street after the 2023 fire; respect the signage and do not photograph the burn areas. Tip 15% to 20% at restaurants and $2 to $4 a night for housekeeping. Hawaii does not change clocks, so it is six hours behind the East Coast in summer. No passport is needed, but a REAL ID or passport is required for the flight.
