Honeymoon Planning Without the Panic: A Month-by-Month Timeline
Honeymoons get planned in the gaps between cake tastings, which is why they go wrong in predictable ways. The Knot's latest survey puts the average honeymoon at $5,300 and seven days, with the Caribbean and Mexico the most popular region and Europe second. This is the timeline I run for couples, counting back from the wedding.
12 to 9 months out: pick the place and the season
Decide where before you decide anything else, because the destination sets the calendar.
Italy is best from April through June and September through early November. July and August are hot, and around August 15, Ferragosto, much of the country closes for its own vacation. On the Amalfi Coast, the ferries between Positano, Amalfi, and Capri run from April through early November, and the larger four- and five-star hotels close at the end of October and reopen at Easter. A late-October Amalfi honeymoon is a quiet one. A December one is mostly closed.
Hawaii is warm all year, about 85°F in summer and 78°F in winter. November through March is the wetter stretch and also whale season, with humpbacks thickest from January to March around Maui. If watching whales from your lanai sounds like the trip, a winter wedding works in your favor.
The Caribbean and Mexico's Atlantic coast share hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, peaking mid-September through October. NOAA's 2026 forecast is a below-normal year for the Atlantic. The Pacific side (Cabo, Puerto Vallarta) is forecast above normal, with its own season running May 15 to November 30.
If Europe is the plan, ETIAS, the €20 travel authorization the EU has been promising, is still not live. The EU's own IT agency said 2026 was no longer feasible and 2027 is now expected. I will tell you when that changes. You do not need to do anything yet.
9 to 6 months out: book the big pieces
Airlines open their schedules about 11 months ahead. American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Alaska, and Hawaiian load flights 330 to 331 days out; Southwest is closer to 6 to 9 months. Having dates on sale does not mean you should buy that day. Google Flights' data puts the lowest fares for Europe at 48 or more days before departure and for Mexico and the Caribbean at about 50 days, with a range of 26 to 79. Expedia's 2026 numbers say international economy fares are cheapest 8 to 15 days out, and that is a gamble nobody should take with a honeymoon. I book flights 2 to 4 months out for the Caribbean and 3 to 5 for Europe, earlier if you need a specific nonstop.
Resorts are different. The honeymoon suite, the overwater bungalow, and the room with the good view sell out first, and the free honeymoon perks are tied to the booking. Excellence Resorts' honeymoon package has to be requested when you book, needs a marriage certificate at check-in, and is valid only for three months after the wedding. Sandals adds sparkling wine, breakfast in bed, and a $100 credit for stays of seven nights or more in Club or Butler categories. None of that is automatic. It goes on the reservation when I make it.
Cruise honeymoons book earliest. Carnival and Royal Caribbean have already opened sailings into 2028.
6 to 4 months out: paperwork and protection
Check both passports now. Italy and the rest of the Schengen area want a passport valid at least 3 months past your departure from Europe and issued within the last 10 years. Mexico requires validity only on the day you enter. Jamaica wants it valid through your exit. The Dominican Republic's official rule is six months, but US citizens currently get in with a passport valid through the trip under an exception that runs until December 31, 2026.
Routine passport processing is 4 to 6 weeks, expedited is 2 to 3 weeks for $60 more, and mail time adds up to two weeks each way. Online renewals cannot be expedited.
Buy travel insurance within 14 to 21 days of your first deposit if you want the cancel-for-any-reason option. That window is the one most couples miss. Cancel-for-any-reason plans return 50% to 75% of what you paid, cost about 3% of the trip, and require canceling at least 48 hours before departure.
3 months out: the name on the ticket
This is the mistake I fix most often. Book every ticket in the name on the passport you will carry. If you plan to change your last name after the wedding, your passport will still show your current name on the honeymoon, so the airline ticket must match it. TSA matches the boarding pass to the ID, and only suffix differences get a pass.
If you change your name within a year of your passport being issued, the State Department's form DS-5504 gets you a corrected passport for free. That is for after the honeymoon.
6 to 2 weeks out: the details that make it feel like a honeymoon
Confirm the honeymoon package on the reservation. Send the resort your flight numbers for the transfer. Book the one dinner that needs a reservation. If you are using a honeymoon fund, Zola charges a 2.5% card fee that either you or the guest pays, and Venmo contributions are free.
Google Flights says summer fares bottom out about 21 days ahead, so if you are flying domestic and never bought the flight, this is the last sensible moment.
The week of
Screenshot every confirmation. Put the passports in the bag first. Text me the day before you fly. I check in with every couple then, and I answer while you are away.
