# Punta Cana or Cancun: Which All-Inclusive Fits Your Family By Alexandra Jones · Published 2026-08-05 · Family Getaways > Flight times, seaweed, kids' clubs, and prices for the two beach trips I book most. Half of the all-inclusive requests I get come down to one choice: Punta Cana or Cancun. Both have big family resorts with kids' clubs and swim-up bars. They differ in how long you fly, what the beach looks like in July, and what you can do once you leave the resort. This is how I sort families between them. ## Flight time decides more than you think From the Northeast, the two are close. New York to Punta Cana is about 4 hours nonstop; New York to Cancun is closer to 4 and a half. Boston is 4 hours to Punta Cana and 5 to Cancun. From the South and Midwest, Cancun wins. Atlanta is 2 hours 40 minutes to Cancun and 3 and a half to Punta Cana. Dallas is under 3 hours to Cancun and almost 5 to Punta Cana. Chicago is 3 hours 49 minutes to Cancun and 4 and a half to Punta Cana. Miami is under 2 hours to Cancun. With a toddler, that hour matters more than any resort amenity. If you are flying from Texas or the Midwest with small kids, I usually start you in Cancun. The ride from the airport is the second clock. In Punta Cana, most of the big Bávaro resorts are 20 to 30 minutes from the airport and Cap Cana is 15 to 25. Uvero Alto, where the Nickelodeon resort sits, is 45 minutes to an hour. In Cancun, the Hotel Zone is 20 to 35 minutes out, Playa del Carmen is 45 minutes to an hour, and Tulum is closer to two hours. A Tulum resort after a Chicago flight with a four-year-old is a long day. ## Beaches, seaweed, and storms Both share the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk around September 10. Direct hits are rare in both places. Punta Cana has taken about six in 170 years of records, most recently Fiona in 2022, and the Yucatán has seen fewer than a dozen landfalls in 40 years, with Beryl in 2024 the latest. Rare is not never, so any summer or fall trip gets travel insurance the day we pay the deposit. Sargassum, the brown seaweed that piles up on Caribbean beaches, is the bigger day-to-day issue. The University of South Florida's ocean lab called 2026 another major sargassum year. It is worst from May through August. In the Dominican Republic, the east-facing Bávaro and Arena Gorda beaches catch the most of it, Cap Cana's reef keeps its beaches cleaner, and Bayahibe on the south coast is mostly clear. On the Mexican side, Playa del Carmen and Tulum get the heaviest arrivals, while Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, and the north end of the Hotel Zone get the least. Dry season is nearly the same in both: December through April in Punta Cana, November through April in Cancun. September and October are the wettest months and also the cheapest, with rates 40% to 60% below peak in Cancun and 40% to 50% below in Punta Cana. ## The resorts Punta Cana has the stronger lineup for kids under ten. Nickelodeon Punta Cana includes the Aqua Nick water park (40-inch height minimum on the big slides) and a Club Nick for ages 4 to 12. Hard Rock Punta Cana runs a kids' club for 4 to 12 and a separate teen room for 13 to 17. Barceló Bávaro includes the Pirates Island water park. Club Med Punta Cana takes kids from age 4 in the included Mini Club and has a paid Baby Club from 4 months. Cancun and the Riviera Maya pack more variety into a smaller radius. Dreams Playa Mujeres runs the Explorer's Club for ages 3 to 12 and a Core Zone for teens. Royalton Splash Riviera Cancún, Moon Palace, Barceló Maya Grand, and Iberostar Paraíso Maya all have water parks on the property. For a honeymooning couple riding along on a family trip, both have adults-only neighbors: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, Secrets Cap Cana, and Excellence Punta Cana on one side, Hyatt Zilara Cancún on the other. Prices are close. In 2026 a 4-star all-inclusive averages about $276 a night in Cancun and $239 in Punta Cana; 5-star runs $505 against $422. A 7-night trip for a family of four comes out around $3,700 in Cancun and $3,850 in Punta Cana once flights are in, because the cheaper Punta Cana rooms get offset by longer flights from most of the country. ## Paperwork and the small stuff The Dominican Republic requires a free online e-ticket for both arrival and departure. US passports only need to be valid through your stay, under an exception that runs through the end of 2026. Mexico stamps your passport on arrival with no paper form, and Quintana Roo charges a tourist tax of about $15 per person, all ages, checked at the airport when you leave. The State Department lists the Dominican Republic at Level 2, "exercise increased caution," and its May 2026 Mexico advisory puts Quintana Roo, the state Cancun sits in, at the same level. Do not drink the tap water in either country. Resorts use purified water and ice, so this mostly matters on excursions. Tip in local currency where you can: a dollar or two per drink and a few dollars per meal in Punta Cana, 20 to 50 pesos for bartenders and housekeeping in Mexico. Your phone works on most US unlimited plans in Mexico at no extra charge. The Dominican Republic costs $12 a day on Verizon and AT&T unless you are on T-Mobile's higher tier. ## Leaving the resort Punta Cana's day trips are long. Saona Island is a 10- to 13-hour door-to-door day for $60 to $180 a person. Scape Park in Cap Cana, with the Hoyo Azul cenote, is $129 for adults and $69 for kids and includes transfers. Cancun's are closer and more varied. The Isla Mujeres ferry is $28 round trip for adults and 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone. Xcaret's basic ticket runs $130 to $150 for adults, about half for kids 5 to 11, and the park is an hour from the Hotel Zone. Chichén Itzá is a real commitment: 2 and a half to 3 hours each way and $85 to $140 per person on a bus tour. ## Who goes where I send families with kids under eight flying from the Northeast to Punta Cana, usually Cap Cana or Bávaro, and to the Nickelodeon resort when the budget allows. I send families from Texas, Georgia, and the Midwest, or anyone who wants a day trip that is not a full day, to Cancun and the Riviera Maya, with a north-end resort in summer to stay ahead of the seaweed.
