When to Book: The Real Lead Times for Disney, Cruises, and All-Inclusives
"When should I book?" is the question behind almost every message I get. The answer is different for each kind of trip, and the gap between early enough and too late is wider than most people expect. This is the calendar I run for my own clients.
Disney World: the trip with the most deadlines
Disney runs on booking windows, and each one opens on a different day.
Resort rooms and packages open far ahead. Disney opened bookings for January through October 2027 on April 16, 2026, and the first 2027 discounts came out on September 10: up to 35% off rooms for stays through April 29, 2027, and up to $250 a night off longer packages from January 3 to July 28, 2027. If you want a specific resort in a school-break week, I book it the week the window opens and apply a discount later when one fits.
Dining reservations open 60 days before the date, at 6:00 a.m. Eastern. Guests staying at a Disney resort can book their whole stay, up to 10 days, on that first morning, so a resort guest effectively reaches 69 days out. Off-site guests book one day at a time. Cinderella's Royal Table and Space 220 go in minutes.
Lightning Lane passes are the newest deadline. Disney resort guests can buy Multi Pass starting 7 days before check-in, for the whole stay. Everyone else gets 3 days. Multi Pass costs roughly $21 to $39 per person per day at Magic Kingdom in 2026, and it hit $45 over Memorial Day weekend. Families forget this step more than any other, and it decides whether you wait 90 minutes for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
Tickets are date-based. A one-day adult Magic Kingdom ticket runs $139 to $209 depending on the day. Park Hopper lets you hop any time after entering your first park, and park reservations are only required for annual passholders and some non-dated tickets. The cheapest stretches on Disney's own pricing calendar are August 17 to October 2, 2026 (skipping Labor Day), December 1 to 12, 2026, and in 2027, January 19 to February 5, May 17 to 26, and August 16 to September 30.
Orlando is not getting quieter. Disney reported domestic park attendance up 3% for the quarter ending June 27, 2026 and told investors that bookings for the months ahead are strong. Universal's Epic Universe is a year old and pulling its own crowds. Two new lands, Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom and the first part of Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios, are scheduled for 2027 and will push 2027 demand higher.
My Disney rule: room 6 to 11 months out, dining at exactly 60 days, Lightning Lane at exactly 7 days, and a text from me the night before each of those mornings.
Cruises: earlier than you think, with one exception
Cruise lines now open sailings 18 to 24 months ahead. Royal Caribbean released most of its 2027–2028 season between October and November 2025. Carnival opened its first 2027–2028 sailings in July 2025 and already has 2028 dates on sale. Disney Cruise Line opened fall 2027 through spring 2028 in the first week of September 2026.
The connecting rooms, the cheapest categories, and the balconies on the good side go first. Royal Caribbean's own booking guide says 6 to 12 months out is the sweet spot for most itineraries and 12 to 18 months for Alaska and Europe. Carnival Corporation told investors in June 2026 that 93% of its 2026 capacity was already sold, with a record $9 billion in customer deposits. People are booking earlier than they used to, so waiting costs more than it used to.
Wave season is the exception worth planning around. From January through March the lines stack perks: onboard credit, reduced deposits, kids-sail-free offers. Royal Caribbean's Kids Sail Free ran January 2 to February 2, 2026, and Carnival ran 50% deposits with final payment due only 30 days out until March 28. If your sailing is 9 to 15 months away, booking in wave season usually beats booking in the fall.
Deposits are smaller than people fear. Royal Caribbean takes $100 per person on 1- to 5-night sailings and $250 on 6 to 9 nights, with final payment due 90 days before a 5- to 14-night cruise. Disney Cruise Line wants final payment 120 days out on sailings of 6 nights or more. Norwegian's group rules let 8 or more cabins hold space with no deposit until 120 days out, and every 16 paying guests earn one free cruise fare, which is how I keep reunion groups affordable.
Last-minute deals exist, but only on cabins nobody wanted, usually inside the 90-day window. That works for a couple with flexible dates and no cabin preference. It does not work for a family of five who need two connecting rooms in July.
All-inclusives: the shortest lead time, with a weather clause
Resorts in Punta Cana, Cancun, and Jamaica have the shortest runway. For peak season, December through April, I book 4 to 6 months ahead, and 6 to 8 months for Christmas and New Year's. Shoulder season is 2 to 4 months. Off-season is 6 to 10 weeks.
Off-season rates run 30% to 50% below peak. A 7-night trip for a family of four in 2026 lands around $3,700 to $7,500 in Cancun and $3,900 to $8,500 in Punta Cana, before the 10% to 15% service charge most resorts add.
Early-booking promotions come in waves. In August, Sandals and Beaches offered up to $1,500 in credits for bookings made by September 7 for travel through the end of 2028, and Hyatt's Inclusive Collection ran Kids Stay Free for bookings through September 30. I watch for these so you do not have to.
The weather clause: hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 in the Atlantic. Travel insurance stops covering a storm once it has a name, so I add insurance the day we pay the deposit, not the week before departure.
Documents: the deadline nobody puts on a calendar
Routine passport processing is 4 to 6 weeks. Expedited is 2 to 3 weeks for an extra $60, and mailing adds up to two weeks each way. Renewing online is convenient but cannot be expedited. The Dominican Republic requires a free e-ticket form for entry and exit. Jamaica has a free C5 form, filed up to 30 days before travel. Mexico stamps your passport on arrival and charges a tourist tax of about $15 per person that is checked when you leave Cancun.
For domestic flights to Orlando, REAL ID has been enforced since May 2025. Travelers without a compliant license now pay $45 for a TSA ConfirmID check at the airport. A passport card works too.
The calendar
Disney: room at 6 to 11 months, dining at 60 days, Lightning Lane at 7 days.
Cruises: 12 to 18 months for Alaska and Europe, 6 to 12 for the Caribbean, and buy in wave season if the dates allow.
All-inclusives: 4 to 6 months for winter, 6 to 8 for the holidays, 6 to 10 weeks in the off-season, insurance on deposit day.
Passports: check the expiration date the day you pick a destination.
